Life’s First Cry

‘War’ is probably the first word that springs to mind when people think of Afghanistan. We don’t imagine the snow-covered mountains, frozen waterfalls and ordinary people trying to live their lives in extreme conditions. We are given a very one-sided story.

BMS World Mission has been working in Afghanistan since the 1990s, and we wanted challenge people’s perceptions and open their eyes to the real human suffering happening in the country. We also wanted to inspire supporters with the enormous potential they have to save lives in one of the most fragile places in the world.

Life’s First Cry is the result of two weeks’ filming in Afghanistan’s mountains. The video follows two key families, but their stories echo many others we heard during that fortnight. Mothers who have suffered the unimaginable grief of giving birth to and then losing more than ten babies. And mothers who experienced the joy of holding their healthy, new-born baby in their arms, knowing they were going to be okay. We wanted to put these mums and their husbands at the heart of the video, and we wanted to give them the opportunity to tell their own stories.
