Small families, small planet

Our planet is in trouble: wildlife is plummeting, global temperatures are rising, oceans are full of plastic and forests are disappearing. Everyone knows that we humans are the culprit, yet many people don’t realise that our rapidly increasing numbers are a major driver of environmental problems. Still fewer realise that they can be part of the solution.

10,000 years ago our planet had to sustain just a few million people. Today, it must sustain 7.6 billion and growing. Our Smaller Families campaign is intended to encourage people to take the most effective direct action they can - having fewer children. Targeted specifically at people of childbearing age, our Small families, small planet video is designed to engage young people and encourage them to think directly about their personal choices.

Population Matter’s vision is of a future with decent living standards for all, a healthy and biodiverse environment, and a stable and sustainable population size. We promote ethical, proven and globally beneficial solutions to population problems, from women’s education and empowerment to family planning and poverty alleviation.
